Garden of Delete

''Garden of Delete'' is the seventh studio album by Oneohtrix Point Never (the recording alias of electronic musician Daniel Lopatin), released on 13 November 2015 on Warp Records. The album was recorded by Lopatin in an isolated basement studio in Brooklyn following a tour with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden as supporting act in 2014.〔(''CoS'' | Interview )〕
Inspired by recollections of his youth and misanthropic 1990s rock music, as well as contemporary chart pop,〔(''Skinny'' interview )〕 the dense and aggressive sound of the material marked a departure from the relatively placid tones of Lopatin's previous releases, and engages with themes of adolescence and abjection.〔(''Dummy Mag'' )〕 Prior to the album's release, Lopatin devised an immersive promotional campaign involving a fictional band, cryptic weblogs, and a teenage alien collaborator.〔〔〔()〕 ''Garden of Delete'' was released to positive critical reception.
==Background and recording==
Following the 2013 release of ''R Plus Seven'' and work on several side projects (including video collaborations for ''R Plus Seven'' and scoring work for the 2015 film ''Partisan'' and the revisited 1995 anime film ''Magnetic Rose'') Lopatin was unexpectedly invited to support Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden on their 2014 joint tour as a replacement for Death Grips.〔(''Skinny'' interview )〕〔(''Stereogum'' )〕 With the assent of NIN frontman Trent Reznor, Lopatin performed 30-minute opening sets of self-described "cyberdrone" to often vexed amphitheater crowds. The tour prompted him to reengage with memories of his childhood and adolescence, in particular via the now-maligned misanthropic guitar music heavily marketed to his age group during the 1990s:〔(''Skinny'' interview )〕〔(''The Fader'' )〕
I was also thinking about the years of my life when I was listening to that stuff seriously. I was thinking about puberty a lot. I was born in ’82, so when I was listening to () ''Superunknown'', it pretty much perfectly lined up with my acne breakout, hair growing on my face – all of that shit. ()’s a bit of a memoir, in a way. I used whatever memories I have left of puberty – which isn’t a lot – and what I realised is that most of the memories I do have from that time in my life are pretty traumatic.〔(''Dummy Mag'' )〕

Upon completing the tour and returning to Brooklyn, Lopatin rented a small, windowless basement studio and began recording new material in isolation.〔(''CoS'' | Interview )〕〔(''Rolling Stone'' | Hear Oneohtrix Point Never Glitchbanger From First 'Rock' Record )〕 In addition to his experiences touring, he has also cited video hosting service Vevo, metal-oriented satellite radio stations such as Ozzy's Boneyard and Lithium, and the writing of French philosopher Julia Kristeva (in particular, her writing on abjection) as inspirations for the recording.〔(''Dummy Mag'' )〕 The recording environment encouraged an abrasive and dense sound relative to OPN's recent releases,〔 with Lopatin stating that "I was making pretty aggressive, nihilistic stuff early on and kind of went away from that for a bit. In some ways I feel like I’m back now."〔
The album's sonic pallet draws on the "cool, frictionless pads, airy choral presets, and () synthesized sounds"〔(Pitchfork )〕 of ''R Plus Seven'' in addition to metal, top 40 radio, alternative rock, contemporary EDM, trance, and industrial music.〔(''The 405'' )〕〔 The album's vocals were rendered using the software instrument Chipspeech, which allowed Lopatin to write text and play it chromatically;〔 the release was accompanied by a lyric sheet.〔(Pitchfork )〕
